West Nile Virus Already Detected in NYS Although the numbers are not currently alarming, the West Nile virus (WVN), which first surfaced in the US in 1999, was detected earlier this year in NYS than in previous years. The first mosquito pool testing positive for WVN was reported in Suffolk County on June 23, and the first human case was reported in NassauCounty. As of July 20, positive WVN test results had been reported in 59 NYS mosquito pools. Thirty eight (38) of those positive test results were in New York City (17 in the Bronx, 14 in Queens, 6 in Staten Island and 1 in Brooklyn). Eighteen (18) were on Long Island (11 in SuffolkCounty and 7 in Nassau). One (1) positive-testing pool was also found in each of the following counties north of NYC – Rockland, Onondaga and Erie.
