H1N1 Vaccine: Inventory Flow to Providers Rising, Officials Say
More than 41 million doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine already have been made available to states but shortages of health personnel to administer the vaccines are creating problems for state and local health officials, a CDC official said on November 10 during testimony at a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions subcommittee hearing. Many local health workers have been forced to take days off without pay as a result of budgetary challenges during the economic recession. Also during the hearing, Christopher Viehbacher, CEO of drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis, said that the company's output of the vaccine has been rising at its vaccine manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania. Viehbacher predicted that Sanofi would ship 75 million doses to the U.S. market by late December.
